My reflections on Jim Green, and a photo of Jim and Frances taken before one of our regular CKNW Civic Affairs Panel discussions. http://gellersworldtravel.blogspot.com/2012/02/jim-green-died-yesterday.html

I, like every Vancouverite, was shocked to hear of Jim’s illness, and even more shocked to hear of his passing. As someone who has often been called upon to tell the story of change in Vancouver, especially in the DTES, I’ve always found it impossible to do so without telling Jim’s significant part in the story. He’s been a community builder in every sense of those words, and he was a man I deeply respected, even when we disagreed – or perhaps especially when we disagreed.

In the week before his passing, we had a chance to connect very briefly by email. I wont share his response, which I’ll only say was very gracious and positive, but i will share what i said to him, expressing my thanks and admiration:

“Hello Jim – I know we don’t know each other very deeply, but I wanted to send a brief note saying how sorry I am upon hearing the news, and that my wife and I are thinking of you and your family in our prayers. You are an exceptional man who has done exceptional things for our city, and I wish you only the best as you put your energies into fighting this. My brother, 4 years older, passed away last year of multiple cancers, and he never stopped fighting and loving his family. I’m sure you’ll do the same, and I pray you’ll find a way to do what others might say can’t be done – as you’ve done before in your life. Thank you for everything you’ve done for all of us in Vancouver, and my very best wishes.”

Jim deserves all the thanks and recognition he’s received these past few weeks, and I hope they give his family great comfort, after a life very well lived.

    @ Brent Toderian #2

…and I’m sorry for your pain, too, Brent.

We are often so unlike the one domensional portraits we paint of each other, aren’t we?

Very much enjoyed your blog post, too @Michael Geller #1.

If only urbanism could unite us as humanists as does death.
