The downtown bear chronicles

December 12th, 2011 · 4 Comments

In case anyone feels they haven’t had a chance to fully express themselves yet about the story of the bear that road into town on a garbage truck and popped into the media eye someone around the central branch of the Vancouver Public Library.

I see one of our regular bloggers here got the first, best pix.

I blame Gregor Roberston, Vision and the whole “greenest city” branding thing they’re trying to accomplish. Obviously, the bears are buying into the hype, making for a dangerous situation.

Bruce Macdonald in his lovely “Vancouver: a visual history” ( 1992 ISBN-13: 978-0889223110
) put all kinds of wildlife sightings on his maps over the century to show the wild and unwildness of areas.

How many bears are just shot for ease of police “conservation” work, but not in public view?
Still it must have been somewhat strange to have Conservation Officers working in their backyards.

A one minute Canadian Press video via the Globe and Mail.
Lots of talking heads only a little with the bear.
    10 second advert starts.
