A poet laureate who will reflect the life of a living city regardless of how many books he’s published? I say — yes, well done to Brad and to those who made the selection. Poets laureate should be selected for a range of reasons — longstanding dedication to poetry and a strong publishing record can be part of it as well as a vision of how to bring poetry into the everyday experience of all Vancouver’s citizens.

I like Brad Cran and think it’s an interesting choice, but as far as I know the he’s only published one poetry book and that didn’t exactly set the world on fire. He’s done good work as an editor and is well-liked by the community, but again, only one book of his own work has been published! Didn’t anyone else want the job?

Congratulations Brad! If your insight and passion is a great during your time as Vancouver’s Poet Laureate as has been proven as one of creators of the Hope in Shadows book, I’m sure you will be a cultural asset to this city. Keep up the good work!
